With the new season of the San Jose Sharks about to start in less than a month, I thought I should write about how this hockey fan from Iowa thinks this new season will go. Let’s see how I do after the season is over. Either I am right on or just way off. Now let’s get started.
The big news over the summer that we all know the All-Time Sharks leader in goals Patrick Marleau took his talents not to South Beach but to the Toronto Maple Leafs. There is a lot of talk about who would step up and fill the void caused by the loss of Patrick. In my opinion I think the 2015 9th round draft pick, winger Timo Meier will fill this role. Call it a hunch or something else but I just think this kid will perform. In the 34 games he played last year with the Sharks, he had 3 goals and 3 assists but with the increased playing time, I think it will benefit him to be consistent with his play. He has shown flashes of being a really good player. During 33 games with the San Jose Barracuda he had 14 goals and 9 assists.
Also this off season they signed Marc Edouard Vlasic and Martin Jones to extensions, Joe Thornton to a one year deal, and resigned Marcus Sorensen to a 2 year contract. Speaking of the Swedish speedster, Sorensen, if one player that can debunk my hunch, it is this fast forward from Sweden. Just like Meier, he also has shown times of being a force in the line up. He only played 19 games but during the first round against the Edmonton Oilers, they knew who he was.
With all the other players from last years squad and the young players from the San Jose Barracuda, the San Jose Sharks will be a playoff team in the 2017 season. If Timo Meier or Marcus Sorensen perform at a level that I think they will play, I think the San Jose Sharks can compete for at least a run to the Conference Finals. We know the play of Brent Burns, Joe Pavelski, and Logan Couture will be consistent. I have been waiting for this time to come. It’s not October yet but the preseason will start very soon.
